Semeru Volcano Indonesia ~ Year 1872
Mount Semeru is the highest mountain in Java, it rises steeply above the coastal plains. The name "Semeru" is derived from Meru, the central world mountain in Hinduism, or Sumeru, the abode of gods. This print was originally published in the year 1872 by Abraham Salm, a Dutch self-taught artist, who came to Indonesia in 1843, settled in Surabaya as a merchant and later owned a tobacco plantation, in Malang. The plantation was so successful that he left the running of it to his two oldest sons and spent most of his time painting.
